The shoulder belt should not cross the face or neck. If the child is sitting in a seat next to a window, move the child toward the center of the vehicle. Page 41 Every time infants and young children ride in vehicles, they should have the protection provided by appropriate restraints. Instead, they need to use a child restraint. Airbags plus lap-shoulder belts offer protection for adults and older children, but not for young children and infants.
Page 43 For most basic types of child restraints, there are many different models available. When purchasing a child restraint, be sure it is designed to be used in a motor vehicle. If it is, the restraint will have a label saying that it meets federal motor vehicle safety standards.
A child restraint system is any device designed for use in a motor vehicle to restrain, seat, or position children. A built-in child restraint system is a permanent part of the motor vehicle. Page 47 When securing an add-on child restraint, refer to the instructions that come with the restraint which may be on the restraint itself or in a booklet, or both, and to this manual. The child restraint instructions are important, so if they are not available, obtain a replacement copy from the manufacturer.
Page Where To Put The Restraint Where to Put the Restraint Accident statistics show that children are safer if they are restrained in the rear rather than the front seat. General Motors recommends that child restraints be secured in a rear seat, including an infant riding in a rear-facing infant seat, a child riding in a forward-facing child seat and an older child riding in a booster seat. Child restraint or Keep in mind that an unsecured child restraint can occupant using move around in a collision or sudden stop and injure safety belt people in the vehicle.
The child restraint manufacturer will provide you with instructions on how to use the child restraint and its attachments. The following explains how to attach a child restraint with these attachments in your vehicle. A top tether anchor is built into the vehicle. The top tether attachment B on the child restraint connects to the top tether anchor in the vehicle in order to reduce the forward movement and rotation of the child restraint during driving or in a crash.
Lower Anchor : Seating positions with two lower anchors. Rear Seat For MAXX models, to assist you in locating the lower anchors, each rear anchor position has a label, near the crease between the seatback and the seat cushion, showing where the Be sure to use an anchor located on the same side of the vehicle as the seating position where the child restraint will be placed.
In a crash, the child could be seriously injured or killed. Page 55 Sedan A. Page 56 This system is designed to make installation of child restraints easier. Some restraints also use another vehicle anchor to secure a top tether. Page Securing A Child Restraint In A Rear Seat Position If the position you are using has an adjustable head restraint and you are using a dual tether route the tether under the head restraint and in between the head restraint posts.

To tighten the belt, push down on the child restraint, pull the shoulder portion of the belt to tighten the lap portion of the belt and feed the shoulder belt back into the retractor. Page 62 Here are the most important things to know about the airbag system: CAUTION: You can be severely injured or killed in a crash if you are not wearing your safety belt, even if you have airbags.
Wearing your safety belt during a crash helps reduce your chance of hitting things inside the vehicle or being ejected from it. Page 66 If your vehicle has a roof-mounted side impact airbag for the driver and the person seated directly behind the driver, it is in the ceiling above the side windows. Do not put anything between an occupant and an airbag, and do not attach or put anything on the steering wheel hub or on or near any other In an impact of sufficient severity, the airbag sensing system detects that the vehicle is in a crash.
Additional windshield breakage may also occur from the right front passenger airbag. Please start with a very important safety device in your vehicle: Buckle up. Page Drunken Driving Drunken Driving Death and injury associated with drinking and driving is a national tragedy. It is the number one contributor to the highway death toll, claiming thousands of victims every year.
Page According to the American Medical Association, a lb 82 kg person who drinks three 12 ounce ml bottles of beer in an hour will end up with a BAC of about 0. A driver with a BAC level of 0. Braking action involves perception time and reaction time. First, you have to decide to push on the brake pedal. That is perception time. Then you have to bring up your foot and do it.
That is reaction time. Average reaction time is about three-fourths of a second. ABS is an advanced electronic braking system that will help prevent a braking skid. Page The anti-lock system can change the brake pressure faster than any driver could. The computer is programmed to make the most of available tire and road conditions. This can help you steer around the obstacle while braking hard. As you brake, your computer keeps receiving updates on wheel speed and controls braking pressure accordingly.
Page Braking In Emergencies Braking in Emergencies At some time, nearly every driver gets into a situation that requires hard braking. If you have anti-lock brakes, you can steer and brake at the same time.
Page If your vehicle is in cruise control when the traction control system begins to limit wheel spin, the cruise control will automatically disengage. When road conditions allow you to safely use it again, you may re-engage the cruise control. This is especially useful in slippery road conditions. The system operates only if it senses that one or both of the front wheels are spinning or beginning to lose traction.
Page Steering To turn the system on or off, press the traction control button located on the center console under the climate control system. When you turn the system off, the Enhanced Traction System warning light will come on and stay on. If the Enhanced Traction System is limiting wheel spin when you press the button to turn the system off, the warning light will come on — Here is why: Experienced driver or beginner, each of us is subject to the same laws of physics when driving on curves.
The traction of the tires against the road surface makes it possible for the vehicle to change its path when you turn the front wheels. Page Steering In Emergencies Steering in Emergencies There are times when steering can be more effective than braking. If the level of the shoulder is only slightly below the pavement, recovery should be fairly easy.
Ease off the accelerator and then, if there is nothing in the way, steer so that your vehicle straddles the edge of the pavement. For one thing, following too closely reduces your area of vision, especially if you are following a larger vehicle. Also, you will not have adequate space if the vehicle ahead suddenly slows or stops.
Page Loss Of Control Loss of Control Let us review what driving experts say about what happens when the three control systems — brakes, steering, and acceleration — do not have enough friction where the tires meet the road to do what the driver has asked.
In any emergency, do not give up. If you do not have ABS, then in a braking skid, where the wheels are no longer rolling, release enough pressure on the brakes to get the wheels rolling again.
This restores steering control. Page No one can see as well at night as in the daytime. But as we get older these differences increase. A year-old driver may require at least twice as much light to see the same thing at night as a year-old. What you do in the daytime can also affect your night vision. On a wet road, you cannot stop, accelerate, or turn as well because your tire-to-road traction is not as good as on dry roads. And, if your tires do not have much tread left, you will get even less traction.
So much water can build up under your tires that they can actually ride on the water. This can happen if the road is wet enough and you are going fast enough. When your vehicle is hydroplaning, it has little or no contact with the road.
Hydroplaning does not happen often. Page City Driving City Driving One of the biggest problems with city streets is the amount of traffic on them. You will want to watch out for what the other drivers are doing and pay attention to traffic signals. Page Freeway Driving Freeway Driving Mile for mile, freeways — also called thruways, parkways, expressways, turnpikes, or superhighways — are the safest of all roads.
But they have their own special rules. The most important advice on freeway driving is: Keep up with traffic and keep to the right. Drive at the same speed most of the other drivers are driving. When you want to leave the freeway, move to the proper lane well in advance. If you miss your exit, do not, under any circumstances, stop and back up. Drive on to the next exit. The exit ramp can be curved, sometimes quite sharply.
Or is it just plain falling asleep at the wheel? Call it highway hypnosis, lack of awareness, or whatever. There is something about an easy stretch of road with the same scenery, along with the hum of the tires on the road, the drone of the engine, and the rush of the wind against the vehicle that can make you sleepy. Page If you drive regularly in steep country, or if you are planning to visit there, here are some tips that can make your trips safer and more enjoyable.
Do not swing wide or cut across the center of the road. Drive at speeds that let you stay in your own lane. There could be something in your lane, like a stalled car or an accident. And, if you will be driving under severe conditions, include a small bag of sand, a piece of old carpet, or a couple of burlap bags to help provide traction. Page But wet ice can be even more trouble because it may offer the least traction of all. Try to avoid driving on wet ice until salt and sand crews can get there.
You should probably stay with your vehicle unless you know for sure that you are near help and you can hike through the snow. This can cause deadly CO carbon monoxide gas to get inside. CO could overcome you and kill you. You cannot see it or smell it, so you might not know it is in your vehicle. The method known as rocking can help you get out when you are stuck, but you must use caution. That will clear the area around your front wheels. If your vehicle has a traction system, you should turn the traction system off.
